Speaker: Stan Orr, CAE, FASAE, OSAE Past President

Topic:

Shortly after moving to Colorado from Oklahoma in 1998 and starting an association management and consulting firm, Stan Orr landed his first client- a small, regional organization with an annual budget of $65,000.  Today the organization is a globally recognized, multi-million-dollar, international association that recently earned the Summit Award from ASAE.

Governance is often viewed by many of today’s CEOs as a necessary evil, a hanging chad that keeps them up at night.  But good governance is quite the opposite.  Association professionals can achieve success and career longevity when they recognize the critical importance of an organizational culture that has robust volunteer management processes in place.  Good governance provides the opportunity and means to move beyond any disruptions facing an organization and its members- political gridlock, social media, technology, and diversity- to name but a few.

A sound leadership and governance core are essential in this age of constant disruptions. In what he refers to as Dancing with a Bear, Orr will share a very deliberate, multi-step process he has deployed to create great organizational results regardless of any disruptions an organization faces.

If you are an exec struggling to engage the best and brightest volunteers in your organization, or if you are working with a governing board that is not making good decisions, this is luncheon you won’t want to miss, and it is an opportunity for you to personally welcome Stan back home to OSAE.

Stan D. Orr, FASAE, CAE, is a professional association manager with 35 years of experience in managing nonprofit organizations. He is president and chief Strategy Officer NonProfit Resources, Inc., an association management company headquartered high in the Rocky Mountains- Glenwood Springs, CO.

Mr. Orr has a degree in education. Prior to gaining his experiences in association management, he was a body guard for the governor of Oklahoma, and spent seven years as a classroom teacher in Edmond, OK.  He believes these experiences- protecting politicians and herding 5th graders- has in some way contributed to his abilities to work with and manage volunteer leaders.

Mr. Orr retired from managing organizations at the end of 2018, preferring to spend his time helping other organizations move from good to great. Prior to retiring, he served as CEO of his AMC's anchor client, the Association of Equipment Management Professionals (AEMP). Prior to AEAMP he served as Chief Staff Officer for several state and national associations, including the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of Oklahoma, ABC of Southern California, the Oklahoma Association of Realtors, and the National Association of Legal Secretaries (NALS).

In October of 2017, AEMP and Mr. Orr received the Summit Award, awarded by the American Society of Association Executives. The summit Award is the association industry's highest global recognition for associations. AEMP and Orr were recognized for efforts in advancing a telematics standard while enhancing the profession of equipment management.
